Crispy Air Fryer Wonton Chips Recipe for Party Snacks

These golden, crispy Air Fryer Wonton Chips taste like the crunchy wonton strips you get at a Chinese restaurant, but they’re incredibly simple to make at home. With just three ingredients—wonton wrappers, olive oil spray, and flaky sea salt—they crisp up in minutes in the air fryer. They’re light, crunchy (not deep-fried), and perfect for snacking, dipping, or serving alongside Asian-inspired meals.

Wontons are often thought of as soft, filled dumplings in dishes like wonton soup, but this air fryer method uses the same wrappers in a different way. Cut into triangles and air fried, the wrappers become crisp chips similar to the crunchy strips served with takeout soups and salads. Because they’re air fried rather than deep fried, these wonton chips are lighter and less greasy while still delivering satisfying crunch.

For the crispiest texture, a light spray of olive oil works best to coat the wrappers evenly without weighing them down. You can brush on oil with a pastry brush if you prefer (olive, vegetable, or sesame oil work), but spraying tends to give more consistent browning. Once finished, these chips are excellent with dips such as sweet chili sauce, crab dip, duck sauce, or a creamy spicy mayo.

Helpful Tips & Variations

  • Work in batches. Don’t crowd the air fryer—smaller batches let each piece crisp quickly instead of steaming under other wrappers.
  • Keep a single even layer. Hot air needs room to circulate around each chip. Overlapping pieces can stay pale, chewy, or brown unevenly. Leave a little space and check at the 3-minute mark since they crisp fast.
  • Use any seasoning you like. Sprinkle salt or seasoning right after spraying so it sticks. Flaky sea salt is simple and delicious, but everything bagel seasoning, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, ranch mix, cinnamon sugar, or red pepper flakes with grated Parmesan are all tasty options.
  • Let them cool. The chips continue to firm as they cool, so wait a minute or two before serving. They’ll be crisper and easier to dip once cooled.
  • Try different shapes. Triangles are easiest (cut each square wrapper in half), but strips or fun cookie-cutter shapes work well for parties and holidays.

Notes

A 12 oz package of wonton wrappers typically contains between 40 and 50 wrappers. I use the Nasoya brand.

If you don’t want to use cooking spray, you can very lightly coat the wrappers with oil using a pastry brush (olive, vegetable, or sesame oil). Brushing can cause uneven browning, so I’ve had the most consistent results with spray.

Depending on your air fryer, the wonton chips can sometimes fly around the basket or curl. To prevent this, place a metal trivet or steamer on top to weigh them down and keep them flat in a single layer.

How to Make Air Fryer Wonton Chips Step by Step

The ingredients to make air fryer wonton chips.

Gather your ingredients and preheat the air fryer to 350°F. Use salt or any seasoning blend you prefer—everything bagel seasoning is a great choice, but simple flaky sea salt works just as well.

A wonton wrapper on a cutting board, followed by a wonton wrapper cut in half on a cutting board.

Slice the wrappers: With a sharp knife, cut 20 square wonton wrappers in half diagonally to yield 40 triangles. Lightly coat the air fryer basket with nonstick olive oil spray so the chips don’t stick.

Wonton wrapper halves in an air fryer basket.

Season the wrappers: Arrange the triangles in a single layer in the basket without overlapping. Work in batches so hot air circulates freely. Lightly spray the tops with olive oil spray and sprinkle with about 1 teaspoon flaky sea salt or your preferred seasoning.

Cook: Air fry at 350°F for 3–4 minutes, checking at 3 minutes. The chips are done when they’re lightly golden and blistered in spots. Watch closely during the final minute to avoid over-browning. Transfer to a plate or cooling rack and let cool a few minutes—their crunch improves as they rest. Serve plain or with sweet chili sauce, crab dip, or your favorite dip.

Serving Suggestions

This recipe yields about 40 wonton chips (roughly 10 chips per serving for 4 people). They’re great on their own or with sweet chili sauce, and they pair wonderfully with creamy dips like crab rangoon dip. Crumble a few over an Asian chicken salad for extra crunch, serve them with egg drop soup instead of the usual strips, or scatter them on top of a pizza for a playful crispy topping.

Storing Leftovers

Room temperature: Store leftover wonton chips in an airtight container or resealable bag. They stay crispiest for 3–4 days and remain acceptable for up to a week, but will gradually soften over time.
