Essential Ingredients for Your Blended Baked Oats

Creating these delightful baked oats requires just a handful of straightforward ingredients, most of which you likely already have in your kitchen. Each component plays a vital role in achieving that perfect cake-like texture and naturally sweet flavor profile. For precise measurements and detailed instructions, refer to the printable recipe card further down this page.

  • Oats: The foundational ingredient for this recipe. We’ll delve deeper into the best types of oats to use for optimal results shortly.
  • Banana: Crucial for natural sweetness and moisture. The riper the banana, the sweeter and more flavorful your baked oats will be. Think of the ripeness you’d choose for making your favorite banana bread – a few brown spots are ideal!
  • Egg: Acts as a binding agent, providing essential structure to the oatmeal mixture, ensuring it bakes up beautifully and holds its shape. For vegan alternatives, see our recipe variations.
  • Milk: Any milk will do! We typically use almond milk for its light flavor, but feel free to substitute with cow’s milk, oat milk, soy milk, or any other milk of your choice.
  • Peanut Butter: A small amount adds a wonderful nutty depth of flavor and a boost of protein, making your breakfast even more satisfying. This ingredient is optional but highly recommended.
  • Pure Maple Syrup: Our preferred natural sweetener. Its rich, warm notes complement the banana and oats perfectly. Honey can also be used as an alternative sweetener.
  • Vanilla Extract: Enhances the overall flavor profile, adding a subtle warmth and aroma that makes the oats feel more indulgent.
  • Baking Powder: This leavening agent is key to achieving that desirable fluffy, cake-like rise and tender crumb.
  • Salt: A pinch of salt is crucial for balancing the sweetness and preventing the flavors from falling flat. It truly brings out the best in all the other ingredients.
  • Blueberries: Fresh or frozen, blueberries add bursts of juicy sweetness and vibrant color. They are highly customizable; other berries or add-ins work just as well.
  • Chocolate Chips (optional): For an extra layer of indulgence, scattering dark chocolate chips on top creates a delightful contrast of flavors and textures.

Choosing the Right Oats for Your Blended Baked Oatmeal

The type of oats you select can slightly influence the final texture of your blended baked oatmeal, though most varieties work well after blending. For the best, most consistent results, we primarily recommend two types:

Rolled Oats: Also known as old-fashioned oats, these are our go-to choice. They blend down into a fine flour-like consistency quite easily, contributing to the smooth, cake-like texture that makes this recipe so popular. Rolled oats offer a good balance of chewiness and tenderness once baked.

Quick Oats: If you’re short on time or prefer a slightly finer texture with less blending effort, quick oats are an excellent alternative. They are pre-steamed and cut into smaller pieces, meaning they will achieve the desired flour-like consistency even faster in your blender. The final baked product will be very similar to that made with rolled oats.

Steel-Cut Oats: While possible to use, steel-cut oats require a bit more effort. They are the least processed form of oats and are much denser. If you opt for steel-cut oats, it’s absolutely crucial to grind them down to a very fine, almost flour-like powder in your blender. If not finely blended, steel-cut oats will result in a significantly chewier texture that deviates from the smooth, cake-like consistency we’re aiming for. Ensure your blender is powerful enough to achieve this fine grind.

Ultimately, rolled oats and quick oats are the easiest and most recommended for achieving that signature smooth, tender blended baked oatmeal texture. The key is always to blend them into a fine flour before combining with the wet ingredients.

Unleash Your Creativity: Exciting Recipe Variations for Blended Baked Oats

The beauty of blended baked oatmeal lies in its incredible adaptability. Once you have the basic recipe down, you can effortlessly transform it into a myriad of flavors, catering to any craving or dietary need. Here are some fantastic ideas to help you customize your next batch:

  • Experiment with Different Milks: While almond milk is a popular choice, feel free to use your preferred variety. Cow’s milk, oat milk, soy milk, or even coconut milk will all work wonderfully, each imparting a subtle difference in flavor and richness.
  • Craft Vegan Baked Oats: Making this recipe entirely plant-based is simple. Ensure you use pure maple syrup instead of honey. For the egg, substitute it with a “flax egg.” To prepare, combine 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed meal with 3 tablespoons of water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it forms a gel-like consistency. Use this in place of the egg. We highly recommend using a flax egg or another egg substitute, as skipping the egg entirely may prevent the oats from rising properly and achieving their ideal texture.
  • Swap Banana for Applesauce: If you’re not a fan of banana or simply want a different flavor profile, substitute the ripe banana with 1/2 cup of unsweetened applesauce. Keep in mind that this will alter the flavor and result in a slightly different, though still delicious, texture. You might need to adjust the sweetener if your applesauce is less sweet than a ripe banana.
  • Explore a Berry Bonanza: Blueberries are fantastic, but don’t stop there! Virtually any berry can be used. Try fresh or frozen strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, or even a vibrant mixed berry blend for a medley of flavors and antioxidants.
  • Boost with Nut Butters: For an added dose of protein and rich flavor, stir in an extra tablespoon of your favorite nut butter. Almond butter, cashew butter, or an extra spoonful of peanut butter are all excellent choices that make the oats even more satisfying.
  • Indulge Your Chocolate Cravings: For the ultimate treat, don’t hesitate to stir in extra chocolate chips (dark, milk, or white!) into the batter before baking, or sprinkle them generously on top. A swirl of Nutella or a few drops of chocolate extract can also elevate the chocolatey goodness.
  • Spice It Up: Add a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, or pumpkin pie spice for a warm, comforting twist. These spices pair beautifully with the banana and oats, especially during cooler months.
  • Add a Protein Punch: For a more substantial post-workout breakfast, consider blending in a scoop of your favorite protein powder. You might need to add a touch more liquid to maintain the desired consistency.
  • Tropical Twist: Introduce shredded coconut, a splash of coconut extract, or chopped mango for an exotic flavor profile.
  • Nutty Crunch: Fold in chopped nuts like walnuts, pecans, or almonds for added texture and healthy fats.

Your Step-by-Step Guide: How to Make Blended Baked Oatmeal

Making these blended baked oats is incredibly straightforward, requiring minimal effort for maximum flavor. They’re quick to prepare – just a few minutes of blending – and bake in about 20-25 minutes, making them an ideal choice for a delicious, healthy breakfast whether it’s a busy weekday or a leisurely weekend brunch. For precise ingredient quantities, refer to the detailed recipe card below.

  1. Prepare Your Baking Dish: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C) with a rack positioned in the center. Lightly grease two 8-ounce ramekins or a single small oven-safe dish with butter or a nonstick cooking spray. This step is crucial to prevent sticking and ensure easy removal.
  2. Pulverize the Oats: Add the dry rolled or quick oats to your blender. Pulse on high speed for about 30 seconds to a minute, or until the oats are ground into a very fine flour-like consistency. This step is critical for achieving the smooth, cake-like texture of the final product.
  3. Blend the Wet Ingredients: Into the same blender (no need to clean it!), add the chunks of ripe banana, egg, milk of your choice, peanut butter (if using), pure maple syrup, vanilla extract, baking powder, and salt. Secure the lid and blend on high for about one minute. Continue blending until all the ingredients are thoroughly combined and the mixture is completely smooth with no visible oat clumps. The batter will appear quite liquidy at this stage, which is perfectly normal.
  4. Incorporate Blueberries: Carefully divide the smooth oat mixture evenly between your prepared ramekins. Gently fold in most of the fresh or frozen blueberries into the batter in each ramekin. Reserve a few blueberries to sprinkle on top.
  5. Top and Bake: Distribute the remaining blueberries and, if desired, a handful of chocolate chips over the surface of each ramekin. Transfer the ramekins to the preheated oven and bake for 22 to 25 minutes. The oats are perfectly cooked when they have risen, feel springy to the touch when gently pressed in the center, and begin to pull away slightly from the edges of the dish.
  6. Serve and Savor: Once baked, carefully remove the ramekins from the oven. Allow them to cool for a few minutes before serving. For an extra touch of deliciousness, top with additional fresh blueberries and a generous drizzle of maple syrup, or a splash of milk if you prefer. Enjoy immediately while warm!

Expert Tips for Perfectly Blended Baked Oatmeal Every Time

Achieving the ideal texture and flavor for your healthy baked oatmeal is simple with these helpful tips:

  • Achieve Maximum Smoothness: Unlike recipes with wheat flour, you don’t need to worry about overmixing when it comes to oats. Blend the ingredients thoroughly until the mixture is completely smooth and resembles a thin batter. Any remaining oat chunks will result in a chewier texture, so keep blending until everything is uniform. The final mixture will be quite runny, but don’t fret; it will firm up beautifully as it bakes.
  • Adjust for Larger Batches: This recipe is easily scalable. If you’re preparing a larger quantity in a bigger baking dish, remember to increase the baking time. As a general rule, add an extra 10 minutes to the baking time and check for doneness. Continue baking in 5-minute increments until fully cooked.
  • Recognizing Doneness: Knowing when your baked oats are just right is key to preventing dryness. Look for a few indicators: the oats should have risen noticeably, the center should feel springy and resilient when gently touched, and the edges will subtly pull away from the sides of the dish.
  • Prevent Overcooking: Overcooked oats can quickly become dry and lose their delightful cake-like texture. In most ovens, blended baked oats are perfectly done between 22 and 25 minutes. Begin checking for doneness around the 20-minute mark. If you notice the top browning too quickly, you can loosely tent the ramekins with foil. Remove from the oven as soon as they meet the doneness criteria to ensure a moist and tender result.
  • Embrace the Ripe Banana: The ripeness of your banana is not just about sweetness; it also contributes to the moisture and binding of the oats. Use bananas with plenty of brown spots for the best flavor and texture.
  • Grease Your Ramekins Well: A well-greased ramekin ensures your baked oats release cleanly, making for a prettier presentation and easier serving.

Serving Suggestions: Elevate Your Blended Baked Oats Experience

Blended baked oats are wonderfully satisfying on their own, thanks to their wholesome ingredients and natural protein content. However, a few thoughtful additions can transform them into an even more decadent or complete meal. Since the oats are already quite hearty and packed with fiber, they provide sustained energy, making them an excellent standalone breakfast. Here are some ideas to enhance your serving experience:

  • Fresh Fruit Feast: While blueberries are often incorporated into the bake, topping your warm oats with an abundance of additional fresh berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries) creates a vibrant and juicy contrast. Sliced bananas, peaches, or even a handful of pomegranate seeds can also add freshness and extra vitamins.
  • Maple Syrup Magic: A generous drizzle of pure maple syrup is our top recommendation. Its warm, sweet notes perfectly complement the oats and fruits, making each bite feel like a special treat.
  • Creamy Indulgence: For those who enjoy a creamier texture, pour a splash of your favorite milk (almond, oat, or cow’s milk) over the top. A dollop of Greek yogurt or a swirl of coconut cream can also add richness and a tangy counterpoint.
  • Nutty Crunch: Add a delightful textural contrast with a sprinkle of chopped nuts like walnuts, pecans, or almonds. Toasted coconut flakes also make a fantastic addition, lending a tropical aroma and crunch.
  • Seeds for Superpowers: A scattering of chia seeds, hemp hearts, or flax seeds can boost the nutritional profile, adding healthy fats and extra fiber without altering the flavor significantly.
  • Whipped Topping: For a truly dessert-like experience, a spoonful of whipped cream (dairy or coconut-based) can turn your healthy breakfast into a celebratory dish.
  • Complete the Meal: While satisfying on their own, you can round out your breakfast with a side of lean protein, like scrambled eggs or a veggie frittata, for a truly power-packed start to your day. A cup of coffee or tea also makes a perfect pairing.

Proper Storage & Reheating for Meal Prep

Blended baked oatmeal is an excellent candidate for meal prep, making healthy breakfasts a breeze throughout the week. Properly stored, you can enjoy these delicious oats for days to come.

  • Refrigeration: Once your baked oats have cooled completely, cover them tightly. You can either cover the individual ramekins with plastic wrap or transfer the oats to an airtight container. They will keep well in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. This makes them perfect for preparing on a Sunday and enjoying for a few mornings.
  • Reheating: To reheat, simply place the refrigerated oats in the microwave. Heat in 30-second intervals until warmed through to your desired temperature. You can also reheat them in a preheated oven at 300°F (150°C) for about 10-15 minutes, or until warm. Adding a splash of milk before reheating can help restore moisture if they seem a little dry.
  • Freezing (Optional): For longer storage, blended baked oats can also be frozen. Wrap individual portions tightly in plastic wrap, then place them in a freezer-safe bag or container. They can be frozen for up to 1-2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating as directed above.

Blended Baked Oatmeal went viral on TikTok for good reason. These baked oats are naturally sweetened by banana and sort of has the texture of cake, while being super healthy! An easy and versatile breakfast idea for busy weekdays and weekend brunch.

Ingredients

Servings: 1x 2x 3x

  • 1 cup rolled oats, (or quick cooking oats – see note below)
  • 1 extra ripe banana, , cut into large chunks
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup almond milk, (or milk of your choice)
  • 1 tablespoon peanut butter, (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup, (or honey)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon flaky sea salt
  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips, (optional)
  • maple syrup, , for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F with a rack in the center position. Grease 2, 8-ounce ramekins with butter or nonstick spray.
  2. Add the oats to a blender and pulse until they are very fine and the consistency of flour.
  3. Add the banana, egg, milk, peanut butter, maple syrup, vanilla, baking powder, and salt to the blender. Blend on high for a minute or so until all the ingredients are fully incorporated.
  4. Divide the mixture between the two ramekins.
  5. Add most of the blueberries, mix thoroughly, then add the remaining blueberries on top. Sprinkle the chocolate chips on top.
  6. Bake for 22-25 minutes or until the oats have risen and are springy to the touch.
  7. Serve with extra blueberries and a drizzle of maple syrup or milk, if desired. Eat immediately and enjoy!

Notes

Try different kinds of milk. Almond milk, cow’s milk, and oat milk all work great, so use whichever milk is your preference.

Using steel-cut oats. Rolled oats and quick oats are my preference, but steel-cut oats are okay to use as long as you’re able to grind them down to a very fine consistency. If the steel-cut oats are not finely blended, they’ll have a chewy texture.

Make vegan baked oats. To make this recipe vegan, use maple syrup and not honey. You can use flaxseed egg instead of egg. Combine 1 tablespoon of flaxseed and 3 tablespoons of water, allow to sit for 5 minutes then use in place of the egg in the recipe. I wouldn’t recommend skipping the egg entirely, because the oats won’t rise properly.

Swap out the blueberries for a different berry. Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and pretty much any other berry will work. Or use a mixed berry blend.
